about

This song emerged as Philippe meditated on the flow of water as a metaphor for liberation. Inspired in part by the film River (which includes Rob McFarlane's words narrated by Willem Dafoe) he followed the impulse to sing this chorus for a number of months not knowing what it would become. Quietly this ecological power balad emerged with words that are a reminder to connect with the beauty of life while also confronting how human habits and behaviours now majorly impact the way that that life is able to flow.

As ever the use of ecological frameworks to expunge his own inner landscapes and quandries rings true with this song. Written during a time of great personal challenge and illness Earthsong/wren now sits hopefully in the catalogue of eco-embracing music that Philippe continues to create.

This recording of Earthsong/wren has rumbling and persistance guitar lines; ideosyncratic of Philippe's sound pushing along throughout that are accompanied by ratty home recorded drum parts and atmospherics hinting at the expansiveness potential of this song in a live setting.

lyrics

open the flood gates
pull down every dam
let the water retrace
what you don’t understand
then the rain will flow from;
sky to the sea
it comes for everyone
even you and me

let the earth be our first love

open that hard place
give me healing hands
let the water retrace
the scars of the land
i see the signs and wonders like a wren
turning pink the sky in the evening
with it’s own song to sing

let the earth be our first love

about

Philippe Nash UK

Drifting beautifully between personal conflicts and the natural world; Philippe's piercing rumination on his own emotive state is met by a crackle of nightly noise in the far-off distance, a wash of ambience approaching.

Led by a voice that is immediately striking, Philippe’s music is at once raw and rigid, and then untethered and vulnerable.
